Overview of role: 

Our Cities Advisory and Economics team address the challenges and opportunities faced by our towns and cities improving the places we live, our infrastructure, the economy, society, and the environment.  We make a tangible impact in the places where we and our clients work and invest, demonstrating meaningful changes on the ground. We use our knowledge and expertise to offer our clients a broad spectrum of consulting services including, but not limited to, the following:  

  • Strategic advice on a wide range of proposals for inclusive economic growth and innovation for private and public sector and Central Government clients both within the UK and globally  
  • Case for investment support including Green Book compliant business cases 
  • Economic analysis and modelling 
  • Data and trend analysis including foresight studies 
  • Vision and Strategies for development sites  
  • Development appraisals 
  • Project delivery advice 
  • Project management support 
  • Stakeholder engagement and management of the consultation process  
  • Impact assessments (such as environmental, communities, socio-economics, equalities and health)  
  • Coordinating multi-disciplinary teams to provide supporting information  

Our Cities Advisory and Economics experts work side by side with specialists from a wide range of backgrounds, including foresight, energy, engineering and advisory teams. Many of our projects are boundary pushing and of strategic significance.  

We work hard to foster good relationships with everyone– including national governments, regional partnerships or agencies, local planning authorities and developers as well the wider community and stakeholders.  

We are currently looking for summer placement students who are interested in working in the built environment.  

This is an excellent opportunity if you are are enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the built environment and shaping better pleaces to get experience working in a multi-disciplinary team.  

You will provide support to team members to deliver an effective and professional service to our clients on strategically won projects.   


What are we looking for? 

We're looking for people with a passion for place-making, who are curious, and have personal drive and technical knowhow. If you can combine these skills with an understanding of (or willingness to learn about) Cities Advisory and Economics and a desire to deliver excellent services for clients, we'd like to hear from you.  

We're looking for the following qualifications, attributes and skills:  

  • Either currently studying or graduated in 2021 with a prediction or having already achieved a of 2:1 or higher (or equivalent) in a subject relevant to our work, such as Economics, Geography, Town, Urban, Spatial or Regional Planning, Social Policy, Politics, Economics, Law, Property, Real Estate, Urban design, Landscape Architecture, Local government and Policy Making or Psychology. 
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills  
  • Possess data analytical skills including use of coding for the analysis of large datasets 
  • Mapping skills using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) 
  • Demonstrate strong motivation and passion for a career in the built environment  
  • Possess strong team working skills  
  • Be planned and organised in your approach to work and meeting deadlines  
  • Be willing to learn and develop as opportunities present themselves  

Arup Summer Internship opportunities typically run for 6-8 weeks. You must be available to start on the opportunity during Summer 2022 and commit to completing the programme in full.
