We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic individual to join our lively Civil team in Manchester and help us shape a better world.

Working with our world class team of dynamic engineers and designers, this role will cover a wide variety of local and nationally important projects both in the UK and overseas.

Our Manchester office contains over 260 talented multidisciplinary designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services and expertise including railway design, construction, installation and commissioning.

The Civil Infrastructure Industrial Placement will work with a team of engineers and technicians working with other professionals in the engineering consulting industry to model, draw (using computer aided systems) and to assist in designing infrastructure (utility, earthworks, drainage, buildings, bridges) found in the built environment. The work will also include some computer modelling and design of the drainage, ground models and highway alignments, such as the car park and access roads.

The infrastructure may take on many forms from newly built infrastructure to the maintenance/enhancement of new infrastructure for every sector of industry

About the role

We are currently recruiting for Civil Engineering Industrial Placement Students to join our well-established Civil Engineering team in Manchester. This is an excellent opportunity for a student that is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the Civil Engineering sector to join a multi-disciplinary team for a period of 8-12 months. Start and end dates can be flexible depending on the candidate's requirements.

You will provide support to team members to deliver an effective and professional service to our clients on strategically won projects. You will assist in preparing designs in co-ordination with the team, and gain a thorough understanding of the role of a design engineer by using relevant software and seeing first-hand how we operate.

Depending on performance, there may be an opportunity to receive a permanent offer of employment upon graduating.

You will work as part of project teams to deliver effective and professional services to our clients. Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of our design teams, you will have the opportunity to work alongside Architects, Building Services and Geotechnical Engineers, Surveyors and Project Managers.

You will be assigned a mentor within your team who you will work and liaise closely with you in your day-to-day work.

  • Ability to produce neat and accurate technical/graphical drawings using computer packages and be able to sketch out ideas by hand
  • Ability to think in a methodical way to design, plan and organise projects
  • Ability to visualise and understand 2D and 3D drawings
  • A temperament that means you work well with other people
  • Excellent communication skills within a team and externally
  • Ability to present and explain the thought processes behind your own design work

Qualifications required:

  • Strong A-levels (or equivalent) at Grade B or above
  • Studying an MEng in Civil Engineering
  • On track to achieve a 2.1 or above, as proven through the modules that you have completed to date
  • Graduating in Summer 2018 or 2019
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate strong motivation and passion for a career in Civil Engineering in the North West region
