Town planning offers many opportunities to help shape the world in which we all live, through policy development through to the promotion and delivery of major schemes, the results of our work are felt across the communities in which we operate.  

Our Town Planners guide development proposals at each stage of the policy development and development management process. With land-standing experience in the planning sector, we offer our clients a broad spectrum of consulting services including, but not limited to the following:   

  • Strategic advice on proposals  
  • Preparation of applications for planning consent  
  • Pre-application consultation and negotiation  
  • Management of the consultation process   
  • Socio-economic impact assessments   
  • Support planning applications through the decision-making and post decision processes  
  • Coordinating multi-disciplinary teams to provide supporting information   
  • Undertake studies to support local planning authorities  
  • Preparation of planning policy and evidence base documents   
  • Appeal services  

Our planning experts work side by side with specialists from a wide range of backgrounds, including environmental, transport planning, design and engineering teams. Many of our projects are boundary pushing and nationally significant.  

We work hard to foster good relationships with everyone involved in the planning process – including national governments, regional partnerships or agencies, local planning authorities and developers as well the wider community and stakeholders.   


About the Role  

We are currently recruiting for town planning students for an 11-12 month Industrial Placement starting from Summer 2022, depending on your availability. This is an excellent opportunity for a student that is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about planning to join a multi-disciplinary team.  

You will provide support to team members to deliver an effective and professional service to our clients on strategically won projects.   


What are we looking for?  

The most important thing we're looking for is somebody who has the potential to become a great consultant – this means being adaptable, collaborating with those around you to use your analytical and problem-solving skills and becoming a trusted advisor to our clients. You might be delivering project work, helping us to develop new services or win new work, so you will need to be a great communicator with strong organisational skills who is enthusiastic, highly driven and motivated to shape a better world.   

Because we do such all-encompassing work, our team is made up of people from almost every degree background that Arup recruits – from Psychology to Geography, Engineering to Ergonomics, and Business to Mathematics.   

Broadly, we're looking for people with the following qualifications, attributes and skills:   

  • Currently studying a degree (for example science, engineering, business, social science, psychology or ergonomics)   
  • Adaptability, versatility and the motivation to apply your skills to a range of projects and service areas   
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills   
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing and verbally   
  • Great reasoning and analytical skills   
  • Excellent digital skills and possesses a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office   
  • Ability to gather, analyse, and generate insights from data   
  • Initiative and creative approach to problem solving   
  • The aptitude to work on your own initiative and be proactive   
  • Understanding of the importance of client care and your role in contributing towards it   

To be eligible, you must be studying a degree course that allows you to complete an industrial placement programme.  

Arup Industrial placement opportunities typically run for 11-12 months. You must be available to start on the opportunity during Summer 2022 and commit to completing the programme in full.
