Launch your career with Arup:

Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, architects, consultants and technical specialists, working across every aspect of today's built environment. Together we help our clients solve their most complex challenges – turning exciting ideas into tangible reality as we strive to find a better way and shape a better world.

Overview of role:

Arup's Protective Intelligence specialists have advised on malicious risks to some of the world's leading buildings and infrastructure projects.

Our Resilience, Security and Risk practice has consistently been at the forefront of the field since it was formed in the mid-1990s. The practice brings together threat and risk specialists, physical and electronic security engineers, strategic operational security specialists, business continuity practitioners and blast engineers in a unique multi-disciplinary environment, helping our clients manage malicious risk, natural hazards and operational reliability in each aspect of their businesses and operations.

Our Protective Intelligence team analyses the nature and scale of terrorism, civil unrest, crime and other malicious risks in urban environments worldwide. Actionable intelligence on threats has a vital role to play in informing the design of buildings, transport infrastructure, bridges and stadia. We work close with our teams in Blast Resilience and Security Engineering in North America, Australasia, Europe and the Middle East. Our intelligence enables businesses that underwrite, construct and operate cities to become more resilient in an evolving threat environment.

About the Role

As Summer Placement your role will be to collect and analyse open source intelligence on malicious risks. You will structure and analyse relevant intelligence data using Excel or other data manipulation tools. You will deliver written and verbal analysis to our clients, and work with them to define their security requirements in accordance with their own risk appetite and other business objectives.

This role is for students studying a relevant degree who are looking to work with us for 6-8 weeks starting in Summer 2022

About you

We're looking for people with a passion for design, curiosity, personal drive and technical knowhow. If you can combine these skills with an understanding of (or willingness to learn about) security consulting and a desire to deliver excellent services for clients, we'd like to hear from you. We're looking for the following qualifications, attributes and skills:

  • Studying towards a degree in a relevant academic discipline, such as politics, sociology, criminology or international relations with a prediction of 2:1 or higher (or equivalent)
  • Strong results in relevant modules (2:1/60% or higher)
  • Experience in data visualisation, data manipulation or coding/scripting skills would be an advantage

Arup Summer Internship opportunities typically run for 6-8 weeks. You must be available to start on the opportunity during Summer 2022 and commit to completing the programme in full.

What we offer you:

Beyond a great salary and stimulating, technically challenging work, Arup offers a range of additional benefits to its people.

You'll have access to lots of learning opportunities including a structured induction and ongoing training through Arup university.

Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to utilise your technical expertise to improve the lives of the most vulnerable in the communities in which we live and work through Arup's community engagement programme.

Next steps:

Complete the application form, attaching any required documents. We'll be reviewing applications on a rolling basis. You are therefore strongly encouraged to apply in advance of the application deadline. Interviews for most Summer Internship opportunities will commence from early February.
