See it differently
You see the world through a unique lens and that’s exactly what we need. We embrace how you see things differently – it’s essential for creating a sustainable future.
Arup is a global consultancy with advisory and technical expertise across more than 150 disciplines. We guide, plan and design the future of the built environment. Globally, each year we recruit hundreds of graduates to help us see things differently and solve the most complex challenges facing our clients, climate and communities.
We are growing our mining capabilities and team in the North of the UK to build on our existing and planned work in the global mining market. You'll be working alongside our diverse Resources and Ground Engineering teams to contribute to mining and underground infrastructure projects where we work in multidisciplinary teams with owners and contractors to develop and deliver sustainable, engineered solutions to complex underground challenges.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a motivated student with skills in or studying mining engineering, applied geology, tunneling, rock mechanics or geochemistry. This is an opportunity to learn more about the work Arup does and be involved in meaningful projects, making a difference.
As part of your internship, you'll have the opportunity to develop your analytical and report writing skills, learn more about the interdisciplinary way we work, get involved in meetings and depending on the projects there may be an opportunity for site visits. You'll work closely with our growing mining team, supporting work such as geological data interpretation, tunneling design, environmental considerations, and digital approaches to subsurface modelling, depending on your background. Your contributions will feed directly into the development of resilient, low‑carbon and future‑ready mining solutions in the UK and internationally.
You will also gain exposure to Arup's collaborative ways of working by engaging with specialists across geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, tunneling, hydrogeology, environmental consulting, and broader infrastructure design. Throughout the internship, you'll be supported by experienced mentors who will help you strengthen your technical understanding, build your professional confidence, and explore potential pathways into a career in mining, resources, or underground engineering.
Is this role right for you?
We're looking for the following qualifications and attributes:
- Strong A-levels (or equivalent) at Grade B or above
- Ideally studying towards or completed a Masters level or PhD in Mining Engineering; Geology/Geochemistry; Rock Mechanics or Tunnelling related, but a strong candidate studying at bachelor's level could be considered.
- On track to achieve a 2.1 or above, as proven through the modules that you have completed to date
- Demonstrate strong motivation and passion for a career in the mining or underground engineering space.
In addition, skills we would look for include:
- Understanding of different perspectives of different disciplines / stakeholders
- Strong numerical and data handling skills
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Software skills such as: OpenGround, RocScience, ArcGIS, Leapfrog, Deswik, VentSim etc
- Good report writing, and written communication skills
- Planned and organised approach to work and meeting deadlines
- Creative approach to problem solving
- Ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a team
Ideally you would be Leeds based, to really be part of the growing mining team, but there could be opportunities to be based in any one of our Northern offices.
We're looking for:
Changemakers: A passion for sustainable development and creating a better world is key.
Innovative minds: We're looking for critical thinkers who embrace new ideas and challenge the status quo.
Growth seekers: You have a growth mindset, always eager to learn and explore new ways of working.

You should be able to start this opportunity in Summer 2026.
