See it differently

You see the world through a unique lens and that’s exactly what we need. We embrace how you see things differently – it’s essential for creating a sustainable future.

Arup is a global consultancy with advisory and technical expertise across more than 150 disciplines. We guide, plan and design the future of the built environment. Globally, each year we recruit hundreds of graduates to help us see things differently and solve the most complex challenges facing our clients, climate and communities.

Established in 2009, Arup University (AU) sits at the heart of how Arup learns, innovates, evolves and delivers its best work. We enable our firm to see further, design better, and create lasting impact. Our mission is to help our members, leadership, and client to navigate change, deliver excellence, and thrive in a fast-changing world.

The core focal areas of Arup's Strategy – enabling Total Design, being immersed in our markets, being agile and borderless, and providing an industry learning member experience – are all enabled by the capabilities, programmes, and services provided by AI. This includes our strategic foresight, research and innovation capability, our learning function, capabilities in knowledge and information management, as well as our global skills networks and work in heritage.

The Opportunity

It is an exciting opportunity to work in the Cultural Heritage team in AU, bringing different approaches to working with heritage and culture within an organisation like Arup. The firm's history is a cornerstone of our values, our approaches and our work, and it is a valuable and impactful aspect of Arup's identity. The person in this role will carry out research, design and develop cultural narratives and engagements, and support the creation of materials that bring heritage and cultural insights to life. The role will be immersed in exploring how cultural understanding, heritage value and storytelling can inform Arup's work, contributing to better understanding of our past and informing our future direction.

Key responsibilities for the Heritage and Cultural Intern include:

  • Supporting AU teams in the design and delivery of projects, events and engagements with a focus on heritage and cultural dimensions
  • Conducting research into Arup's cultural contexts, histories and heritage assets to inform the team's programme and projects
  • Assisting multidisciplinary teams in developing narratives, reports, workshop materials and other outputs that integrate cultural and heritage perspectives
  • Contributing to the wider community of practice within AU, particularly around culture, heritage and place-based thinking

The intern will be supported by peers and mentors to learn more about the structure and work of AU, participate in industry-leading events and engagements, and contribute to impactful client projects. As part of AU and Arup, they will gain exposure to a wide range of expertise and knowledge and explore how heritage and culture can play a vital role in shaping better futures for people, places and the planet.
