In Arup Acoustics we are responsible for the beautiful sound in concert halls and for controlling vibration in sensitive laboratory environments. We help reduce the impact of noise from airports, railways, highways and stadiums, while making sure sound systems are heard with clarity in even the busiest transport hubs.
Our international acoustics design team provides services in the design of acoustics, noise and vibration for buildings and transportation. Our venue design team leads the operational planning and technical systems design of venues from music to sports. Our industry leading work in the prediction and assessment of noise from new major infrastructure such as HS2 and Heathrow airport has expanded our expertise in modelling and data analysis through to innovative presentation to the public via auralisation and visualisation.

What are we looking for?
This role is for students studying a relevant degree who are looking to take a mid-degree year placement starting in September 2019.

What will you offer Arup?
Ideally you will currently be in your second or third year of study looking to enter graduate employment no earlier than September 2021, however, we will consider students/graduates at any stage of your education.
You should be an innovative problem solver, with a practical curiosity to understand how things work and how to make them better and who is able to communicate ideas and solutions. You should have a positive and forward-thinking approach and enjoy working as part of a friendly and supportive team. Workload will be diverse and the ability to multi-task and manage your workload is important.
Data analytics, data quality, machine learning & artificial intelligence methodologies and the online use of data are techniques that we are developing to support our practice in acoustics, noise and vibration. We want someone who can help to expand this further through innovative thinking, enthusiasm and vision. You should be keen to learn and develop your skills as you gain experience in new areas of work.
You should be a well-rounded person in terms of interests and ambitions and keen to be deeply involved in both the Acoustics team and the wider digital communities.
You will be working towards a first degree and/or an MSc (or equivalent) in a relevant subject such as computer science, or data analytics, or physics and engineering degrees with a high proportion of computational thinking, algorithms and data structures, software development methodologies, object-oriented programming and database systems. You should have proven academic experience of utilising and deploying data solutions.
We are particularly keen to meet people with experience in ‘big data' and software development, including Python, C sharp, C++, visual basics, SQL, PowerBI, Pascal, Java, MatLab and/or PHP.
We would also be interested in applicants who have an interest or experience in the application of these skills to 3D geometry and data management (GIS, BIM, Revit etc), visualisation and gaming, and knowledge of related hardware.
