Overview of the role: 

Arup's Building engineering team is embarking on significant digital transformation, with a focus on consolidating and organising our underlying project design data and leveraging this in order to deliver new services to our existing and new built environment clients. This is an exciting time and we are focussed on differentiating Arup designed buildings from our competitors.  

We have and exciting opportunity to join the growing Buildings Digital team in Leeds, a team that are leading the push to create and deploy new tools and solution for our building engineering teams and clients. You will join a virtual team of engineers and developers from all background, who are driving digital change. 


Your responsibilities could include:

  • Authoring of scripts for modules and functions within new software tools and solutions being developed by the team 
  • Developing front end UI in javascript using frameworks such as React, React Native and Angular 
  • Develop back end solutions using expressJS, PSQL, Docker, Graph and NoSQL databases 
  • Developing, deploying and managing cloud resources in AWS or Azure for new and existing products and tools 
  • Pre-deployment testing, CI/CD pipelines 
  • Developing gaming engine based digital twin applications using Unreal Engine and Unity 
  • Implementing project software automation workflows using C#, python, speckle and proprietary visual coding tools such as grasshopper and dynamo 


The software tooling and solutions being developed will be used to support our Buildings and Civil Engineering project community. 

This apprenticeship leads to a Higher Apprenticeship in Software Development. A mentor will be provided to ensure a smooth transition into the working environment. Many apprentices are also working in a number of other departments, providing a ready-made network. 


What are we looking for? 


We're looking for the following qualifications, attributes and skills: 

  • A minimum of 3 A levels at Grade C or above, or equivalent, or a BTEC Level 3 equivalent in a related discipline 
  • Grade C/4 or above in English and Grade B/5 or above in Maths GCSE, or equivalent qualification 


You must be available to start this opportunity in September 2022.
