Arup provides venue consultancy to arts, culture and entertainment clients – for experiences, places, buildings and districts. Projects range across all forms of live and visual artforms on a local and international scale, from community arts facilities, museums and galleries, theatres, studios and concert venues; to master-planning entire cultural districts. We guide projects from inception and planning, through design, testing and commissioning to help clients achieve their aspirations, working closely with public authorities, operators, architects, engineers and theatre staff.
We are looking for a Graduate Consultant to join our team in Winchester, London or Manchester. From your first day, you will join a community of experts, closely linked with our colleagues around the globe, where everyone is supported in their career path and encouraged to work towards a professional qualification.
You will work with the team to undertake conceptual and technical design, provide high quality design information and support projects through construction, commissioning and early operation. You will be engaged on a portfolio of projects, working with different teams and ranging in scale, duration and design stage, providing you with a diverse working environment.
Under the guidance of experienced practitioners, you will work across the following areas:
- Visual and performing arts centre design, gallery, museum and auditorium planning and operational design, including back of house facilities as well as public spaces
- Production and gallery lighting and lighting control systems
- Audio-visual systems, including sound, video, communications and projection
- Stage machinery and automation control systems
- Digital performance technical infrastructure
You will have the opportunity to:
- Develop innovative solutions within constraints of project budgets
- Undertake conceptual through to technical design
- Participate in discussions with clients, relevant communities and other stakeholders
- Undertake calculations, drawings and modelling of venue technical systems
- Prepare presentations and technical documents for clear communication with design teams and users
- Contribute to and review designs of other parties
- Review systems onsite and assist with specialist venue systems inspection and commissioning
For this opportunity, we are seeking the following qualifications, skills and attributes:
- A Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, in any subject
- A demonstrable interest in visual arts and experience of working in a gallery, studio or museum environment (ideally in a technical, operations, curatorial or visitor experience capacity) And / or…
- Experience of working in performing arts production (amateur and/or professional) with knowledge of specialist technical equipment and rigging
- Curiosity about industry developments, and the future of arts and culture in a changing world.
- Creativity in developing design solutions
- Excellent attention to detail, planning, and organisational skills
- Good time management and ability to work concurrently on multiple projects
