Arup provides theatre and venue consultancy to arts venues and building design teams, working closely with architects, engineers and theatre technicians.  Projects range from small extensions to school or community arts facilities, important in our local communities, to the design of new building international theatre and concert venues.  We help clients achieve their aspirations in venues by guiding projects from conception and planning through design, construction, testing and commissioning.

The Graduate Consultant will work with Arup’s theatre / venue consulting team to undertake engineering designs, provide high quality design information and support technical installations through construction, commissioning and early operation. 

About the role

We are looking for a Graduate Consultant to join our team of bright venues professionals in Winchester and London. You’ll help us to deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high-profile clients. While you’ll have a great deal of responsibility from day one, we’ll give you the chance to take on more as you progress and broaden your skills, as well as supporting and mentoring you as you work towards a professional qualification.

Under the guidance of experienced engineers and practitioners you will undertakes design and consultancy in the following areas:

  • Audio Visual systems including production sound, video and projection
  • Digital performance technical infrastructure
  • Stage engineering
  • Production lighting and lighting control systems
  • Performing arts centre planning
  • Auditorium planning
  • Undertake calculations, drawings and modelling of theatre technical systems
  • Technical document preparation and presentation for clear communication with design teams and users
  • Provide high quality deliverables within time constraints
  • Review designs of other parties
  • Review systems on site and assist with specialist performance systems inspection and commissioning.
  • Develop innovative solutions within constraints of project budgets

The role is part of a team of specialists, where the graduate would learn and develop skills across all areas.

You will need the following qualifications, attributes and skills:


  • Good degree in an appropriate subject (e.g. architecture, engineering, technical theatre)
  • Experience of working in performing arts production, and knowledge of specialist technical equipment 

Essential Skills:

  • Enthusiasm for performing arts and the design of facilities for the performing arts
  • Understand the needs of your clients
  • Strong numerical skills
  • Proficiency in use of drawing packages eg AutoCAD
  • Excellent communications skills (both written, verbal and face-to-face)
  • Creative in developing engineering solutions

Desirable/Non-essential Skills:

  • Relevant professional membership (eg Associate Member of the ABTT, ALD or ASD)
  • Knowledge of the construction industry
  • Ability to maintain personal effectiveness and team relationships at times of significant pressure
  • Experience in recording and signal processing
  • Commercial acumen

Additional details

We are looking for Graduate Consultants to join our team in our offices of Winchester or London:

Our Graduate Welcome and Skills Week will take place in September 2018. Although we can be flexible on start dates we would hope that the successful candidate will join their peers for this event.

Please note that we are unable to offer Tier 2 visa sponsorship for this role. Therefore you must ensure that you are eligible to work in the UK without our sponsorship in order for your application to be considered.
