A Future with purpose

At Arup we’re dedicated to sustainable development and to do socially useful work that has meaning. Our purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

We solve the world's most complex problems and deliver what seems impossible. We explore challenges with curiosity and creativity - using technology, imagination and rigour to deliver remarkable outcomes.

The Opportunity

Our projects are diverse and range from conceptual fire strategy development through to handing over landmark projects, such as the Tate Modern, Macallan distillery, Birmingham New Street Station and the Eden Project; we undertake fire safety research to develop evidence-based solutions for novel fire safety hazards and strive to find ways to improve safety equity for the most vulnerable. We do this for our clients, and in partnership with academia and industry, applying our ‘total fire engineering' approach, allowing us to work on project from feasibility to operation. We strive to enable a sustainable, resilient built environment, using the latest knowledge and expertise, assisted by our own in-house digital tools and software.

We're looking for graduates to join our team of talented of over 120 fire engineers across our UK offices. Your role will encompass all aspects of fire safety engineering. This will range from preparing fire strategies in co-ordination with the engineering design team to the inspection and assessment of fire safety management and protection measures in existing buildings/facilities.

As part of this, you will have the opportunity to liaise with external designers and other construction and building professionals on a wide range of projects; experience and develop your ability to use fire-specific design software; conduct research in a variety of skills groups; and have the opportunity to visit sites to monitor the implementation of fire strategies and learn about the installation and construction of fire safety systems. From day one, you'll be given responsibility to help contribute to a range of varied and high-profile clients but will also be supported in learning about fire engineering and developing as a fire engineer. We encourage all employees to work towards a professional qualification and you will be given support in this endeavour as well.

Is this role right for you?

For this opportunity, we are seeking the following qualifications, skills and attributes:

  • Master's or bachelor's degree with a prediction of a 2:2 or above in a relevant subject necessary to obtain engineering chartership, such as: Fire Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Construction Management, Building Surveying, Applied Mathematics
  • We will consider Architectural degrees with relevant fire safety modules. However, the focus of the role will be in the engineering discipline as opposed to pure design
  • Excellent written English, and able to provide evidence/example of own work, if requested
  • Strong numerical skills
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Creative approach to problem solving
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and as part of a team
  • Demonstrate an organised approach to work and meeting deadlines
  • Able to use your own initiative, be inquisitive and proactive

We're looking for people who are curious and ready to evolve how you think and work.  Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas. At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. If you can share your knowledge and ideas and encourage others to do the same; whilst having a desire to deliver excellent services for clients – we'd like to hear from you.

You should be able to start this opportunity in September 2025.
