Our planning, policy and economic experts work collaboratively with specialists from a wide range of backgrounds, including environmental, design, energy, sustainability, legal, costing, engineering and infrastructure and transactions to ensure that our advice is pragmatic and delivers value. Many of our projects are boundary pushing and nationally significant.  

 

What is the role?   

We are currently looking to recruit an Industrial Placement Student to join our established team of Consultants in the North region. Primarily based in Newcastle, with collaboration between offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast, you will work within a wider team to deliver an effective and professional service to a wide range of clients including Airport's, renewables energy providers and public sector clients. Projects can vary in duration and location which helps to provide a diverse working environment. Due to the nature of our work you will have the opportunity to gain a broad range of skills, and will develop over the course of your time with us as you gain increased responsibility. Both commercial and technical training is available and encouraged as you gain more experience. You will be encouraged to work towards a professional qualification to support your on-going career development.  

We're looking for students who have completed their undergraduate studies in Town or Urban Planning or a relevant discipline and are looking to take an Industrial Placement as part of their Post-graduate studies. We are seeking for a person with curiosity, personal drive and technical knowhow. If you can combine these skills with an understanding of (or willingness to learn about) the industry and a desire to deliver excellent services for clients, we'd like to hear from you.  

Qualifications  

Undergraduate degree in subjects relating to Town, Spatial, Urban or Regional Planning, Economics, Geography, Urban Policy, Public Policy and Regeneration with achieved results of 2:1 or higher  

Skills  

Have an appreciation and understanding of the practical aspects of some or all of the following:  

  • An understanding of the relationship between planning, environment, design, infrastructure and sustainability is desirable  
  • Social value  
  • Community engagement, consultation techniques and approaches  
  • place making/urban policy and strategy  
  • town/urban planning  
  • public policy formulation and/or  
  • local economic development and/or socio-economic assessment  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong numeracy and analytical skills  
  • Detail conscious and accurate with the ability to understand and respond to the needs of clients  
  • Strong team working skills

To be eligible, you must be studying a degree course that allows you to complete an industrial placement programme. 

Arup Industrial placement opportunities typically run for 11-12 months. You must be available to start on the opportunity during Summer 2022 and commit to completing the programme in full.
