Launch your career with Arup

Are you passionate about making a difference in communities? Interested in sustainability? We have an opportunity in our Social Value team.

Please note: The apprenticeship you will be studying towards will be in Business Administration at Level 3. As such, this opportunity could suit those finishing their GCSEs or A Levels (or equivalent).

Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, architects, consultants and technical specialists, working across every aspect of today's built environment.

Our North-West and Yorkshire Social Value Team is growing, as the focus on sustainability and delivering social impact on built environment projects rapidly increases.  The team works to embed social value outcomes into Arup's projects to ultimately help improve the quality of life of the communities and individuals impacted by our projects.

This is a brilliant opportunity to gain hands on experience and understanding of a wide range of social value projects, whilst also delivering business administration support to this growing team.

Our apprenticeships allow you to study for an academic qualification while working and learning alongside respected, technical professionals. As an apprentice, you'll study via a blend of online content and 1:1/small group tutorials, along with review meetings with your tutor – all combined with real responsibilities in the workplace. A dedicated mentor and our learning and development team will guide you through your personal and professional development.

Overview of the role:

Do you have an interest in helping your community? Want the work you do to have a social impact and focus on equality and inclusion?

Right now we're looking for an apprentice to join our Social Value team in Manchester, Leeds or Liverpool. You will provide day-to-day business administration assistance to this busy team, helping them to provide social value support to internal teams (engineers, planners and other design professionals). You will also help us to deliver effective and professional services to a wide range of varied and high profile clients.

From your first day, you'll join a community of social value and sustainability experts and wider business service colleagues, where everyone is supported in their career path and encouraged to work towards an accredited qualification.

The projects that you will work on will vary in size, location and complexity. They will also span a broad range of sectors and industries, such as highways, rail schemes, energy or new office/retail/residential developments, as social value rises up the agendas of our clients.

As part of your apprenticeship, you'll study towards a Level 3 qualification in Business Administration with one of our approved training providers.

What we're looking for:

We're looking for a dynamic and dedicated individual to join us in this role. If you are interested in social value and sustainability, and keen to build a fulfilling career in business administration delivering excellent services for clients, we'd like to hear from you.

We're looking for the following qualifications, attributes and skills:

  • Keen interest in sustainability and /or social value
  • Some experience of working, participating or volunteering in the local community
  • GCSEs (grade C/4 or above) in English and Maths
  • Good communication skills
  • Experience of using software packages such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams
  • Ability to organise your own work and always be on time
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to produce neat and accurate work
  • Willingness to achieve professional qualification e.g. NVQ
  • Lots of enthusiasm for this learning and development opportunity

What is social value?

Arup believes that social value is about improving the well-being and quality of life of the users and communities through the projects that we design and deliver. We aim to make our projects ‘socially useful', as well as technically excellent. https://www.arup.com/perspectives/what-if-the-client-was-everyone-how-social-value-can-transform-urban-development

The North-West and Yorkshire Social Value team looks to advise clients on how to embed social value in their businesses and projects, as well as driving and supporting Arup's own actions as a responsible business.

What we offer you:

Beyond a great salary and stimulating, technically challenging work, Arup offers a range of additional benefits to its people.

As a membership organisation, everyone shares in our success through a global profit share scheme. Our people also have access to a range of broader wellbeing benefits.

You'll have access to lots of learning opportunities including a structured induction and ongoing training through Arup university.

Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to utilise your technical expertise to improve the lives of the most vulnerable in the communities in which we live and work through Arup's community engagement programme.

Next steps:

Complete the application form, attaching any required documents. We'll be reviewing applications on a rolling basis. You are therefore strongly encouraged to apply in advance of the application deadline. The assessment centre for this opportunity will take place from April.
