Our Level 4 Higher Apprenticeships
Our apprenticeships allow you to study for industry-recognised qualifications whilst earning a competitive salary. As an apprentice, you will study with a training provider, such as a college, and combine this experience with real responsibilities in the workplace. Your study pattern will be on a day release basis, undertaken at a local provider. A dedicated mentor within the Structural Engineering Team will guide you through your personal and professional development. Level 4 Higher Apprenticeships have a typical duration of two years during which you will attain both a professional and academic qualification to further your career. Our apprentices are employed on a permanent basis, so you'll continue to progress with Arup once you've completed your course.
The Opportunity

Arup are looking for the next generation of Structural Technicians and are looking for a Technician Apprentice to join our Buildings Team.
You will assist a team of technicians, engineers and other professionals on a wide variety of exciting building projects across various industry sectors including education, healthcare, data centres, automotive, retail, transport, and sport. As part of your apprenticeship, you'll study towards a Level 4 Apprenticeship qualification in Civil Engineering with one of our local partner colleges.
We are also open to students who would like to enter at any Apprenticeship level (Level 3 to Level 6), subject to their current qualifications, or who are keen to work towards further Apprenticeship levels in the future.
You'll join a group of multi-disciplinary and versatile Technicians, Engineers & Building Information Modellers in the Structural Engineering team: You'll have exposure to:
- Our creativity and technical expertise that allow us to take on ambitious projects that few companies can deliver;
- A wide array of Technology and Software based applications centre around Digital Delivery of Structural Design Information.
- We bring together professionals from diverse disciplines to solve highly complex development problems;

- A friendly, sociable, dynamic team encouraging learning and knowledge acquisition.
You'll report to the group BIM Manager & project engineers within the Structural Engineering team to help deliver high quality Building Information Models and Technical Drawings to a range of varied and high-profile clients, where you'll be given you the chance to take on more responsibility as you progress and develop your skills.
The role includes:
- Learning about Building Information Modelling in 2D & 3D and helping Technicians with model/drawing production tasks.
- Site surveys of both new and existing buildings.
- Assisting Project Engineers.
- Gaining an understanding & appreciation of how Building Structures work and how they interface with other disciplines.
- Taking part in design meetings, site visits, presentations and workshops
For course enrolment at Level 4, you'll need as a minimum, either a Level Three Apprenticeship in a relevant construction/engineering qualification, or A Levels/BTEC/T-Levels equating to a minimum of 48 UCAS point in a relevant construction/engineering qualification. You will also need 5 GCSEs or more at Grade 5 or above, to include Maths and English, or an appropriate Level 2 Diploma qualification at Merit Grade and GCSE Maths and English at Grade 5.
You'll also need:
- Qualification in or basic comprehension of computer science or other technology subjects.
- Interest in using computers for design work, 3D modelling, gaming, calculations and digital testing
- The ability to organise your own work and always be on time
- Good communication skills
- The ability to work as part of a team
- Lots of passion for this learning and development opportunity

Eligibility for apprenticeship funding requires candidates to have the right to work in the UK and continuous residency in the UK since at least September 2022. Candidates holding a visa must ensure it remains valid for the full duration of the apprenticeship.
